Reader Mail: Cub Notes

In: Cubs, Misc

Reader Dan writes:
Well, I can’t even say that it was “good while it lasted,” as this season’s Cubs team completely gasped and sputtered its way into the playoffs. Then, when in the playoffs, did absolutely N-O-T-H-I-N-G (you are excused Mr. Zambrano).
Is it too soon to make a wish list/hoped for recommendations for next season?

Sad Sack Ale

In: Beer, Misc

In tribute to the demise of the 2007 Cubs in yesterday’s 5-1 loss to the Arizona Diamond backs, I’m brewing a very simple American Pale Ale.
I’m using the following ingredients:
Munton’s light Malt extract (6.6 lbs)
Willamette pellet hops - boiling (1 oz.)
Amarillo whole hops - bittering (1.oz)
Safale US-05 dry ale yeast (11.5g)
I boiled the malt and [...]

The news is good so far about Kerry Wood’s recovery. But I’m afraid to be excited. Instead I think I’ll just go back and read Bissinger’s article again.

There’s a Sun-Times For Every Season

In: Chicago, Media, Misc

There’s lots of discussion in the local blogosphere this week about the Sun-Times‘ editorial page changes. Steve Huntley, long-time editor, is now a columnist and is openly admitting is sympathy for conservatives (and libertarians). But the editorial page is under new management and is returning the paper to its liberal routes. This has lead many [...]

Kurt Loder on SiCKO

In: Misc

MTV legend Kurt Loder seems to have written the definitive critique of SiCKO:
Unfortunately, Moore is also a con man of a very brazen sort, and never more so than in this film. His cherry-picked facts, manipulative interviews (with lingering close-ups of distraught people breaking down in tears) and blithe assertions (how does he know 18 [...]

Calatrava spire underway

In: Chicago, Misc

I’m sure I’ll learn to love it … someday.

The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.
