Living and breathing in the Second City
Bears camp is underway and of course all the news so far is terrific. We know Grossman will be at least a little better and if not he’ll get pulled. We know the running game will be more physical than last year. We know that Turner is going to put Grossman in the shotgun more often to give him a better view of the field. We know Devin Hester is going to be fun to watch and we know the two tight end set is going to be tough to cover. All this is great but, frankly, my mind is still on baseball.
The Cubs have a real shot at the playoffs this year. When their offense performs, it is impressive. Their pitching, while not stellar, has been pretty damn good, at least when compared with what they had to work with last year. How far can the Cubs get in the playoffs? As far as their starting pitching will take them. It may only be a couple of games but so be it. The sense is that they are building a perennial contender on the north side.
And I think, what a great time to be a Chicago sports fan. I’ve only been in the city for 8 years or so and already I’ve seen the Cubs in the NLCS, the Sox win a World Series, the Bears get to the Super Bowl, and the Bulls make the playoffs for the first time since the Jordan era. And what makes it even better, is that all of these teams seem to be on the ascent (well, maybe not the Sox) with even better times ahead. Let’s hope it lasts.
