Living and breathing in the Second City
In light of the Cubs bullpen implosions of late. I would like to pat myself on the back for doubting the bullpen early on.
Meanwhile, reader Dan writes in:
My own personal observations on the Cubs as of May 15, 2007. Again, my own opinion, subject to criticism…
* Soriano is overpaid and frankly, not very good. He’s not very good in the field, he strikes out on HORRIBLE pitches, and while he can at times be an exciting player, ultimately he is a DH, and belongs in the AL. Big mistake to spend TONS of money on the guy. He often looks lost in the OF with many catchable balls being allowed to drop in front of him, as happened last night.
* Theriot is a good, solid ballplayer. As long as he remains healthy, he will be a solid and consistent addition to the Cubs…think Ryne Sandberg.
* Jacque Jones will NEVER be liked by Cubs fans. PERIOD. While he may hit 25-35 HR’s a year, he will also continue to hack at balls way out of the zone in critical games…as he has done on MULTIPLE occasions this season. He is WAY TOO inconsistent.
* The bullpen will continue to cause Lou Piniella angina, as walking in the winning run against the Mets did last night.
* It’s easy to point out all the flaws in the Cubs…one must also offer up solutions, which is considerably more difficult. As asinine as it might sound, if the Cubs fall woefully out of it, and there is interest (not going to happen) I’d like to see them try to trade Soriano and his monstrous contract. Trade Jones, for ANYTHING. Play Theriot everyday. Play Murton…getting him as many at bats as possible against lefties and righties…it’s the only way he’ll learn. OF = Floyd, Pie, Murton. Izturis will be gone after the season…not sure who is in minors for SS…assume Theriot play SS with DeRosa at 2nd. SIGN Zambrano (he gives you innings in addition to headaches & sign Barret). Make a ply at end of season for Ichiro…perhaps he’s like to be reunited with Piniella…and imagine him in CF, AND his speed on basepaths, AND his hitting & bunting prowess.
* That’s all for now….

It sits looking
over harbor and city
